Did you know that your body has a built-in system for shifting between calm, stress, and shutdown? It’s all thanks to the vagus nerve - and Polyvagal Theory helps explain how it works. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory shows us that our nervous system has three main modes:
✨ Safe & Social (Ventral Vagal) – When you feel calm, connected, and ready to engage with others. This is your happy, peaceful state.

Reyan Saab | Student Counsellor on Instagram: "The Polyvagal Ladder offers a fascinating way to visualize how our nervous system responds to the world around us. Think of it as a ladder with three main rungs, each representing how we move through states of safety, stress, and extreme stress 🧠🍃

- Top Rung - Ventral Vagal State (Safe and Social): When we feel safe, our body is in a ‘social engagement’ mode, promoting calmness, connection, and openness.
- Middle Rung - Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight): Faced with danger, we switch to a more primal response, ready to either fight back or make a quick getaway.
- Bottom Rung - Dorsal Vagal State (Freeze): In overwhelming situations, our body might hit the pause button, making us feel stuck or disconnected.

Jennifer Mann on Instagram: "With Polyvagal Theory, you can help track stress + trauma’s impact on the nervous system to reduce chronic symptoms and enhance healing.

Polyvagal theory explains that when we meet a challenge that overwhelms the ventral vagal system (executive functioning part of the brain), we move down the “ladder” into the mobilization of the sympathetic nervous system which allows for some form of fight or flight. If that the challenge cannot be resolved in the place of the sympathetic state, we then move to the most primitive of our survival responses, into immobilization and disconnection found in the dorsal vagal system (the reptilian brain). Dr. Porges explains that in order to move from the bottom of the hierarchy to return to ventral vagal regulation (a place of saf How Does The Nervous System Work, Autonomic Nervous System Ladder, Interest Based Nervous System, The Somatic Nervous System, Healing Disregulated Nervous System, Reptilian Brain, Executive Functioning, Nervous System, No Response
