Albert encouraged Victoria to believe that she was weak, inadequate and unable to cope without him. In her desire to please him she abdicated most of her responsibilities as monarch to her consort.

Winterhalter was born in the Black Forest where he was encouraged to draw at school. In 1818 he went to Freiburg to study under Karl Ludwig Schüler and then moved to Munich in 1823, where he attended the Academy and studied under Josef Stieler, a fashionable portrait painter. Princess Toria looks gorgeous, but the frilly item (boa? jacket frill?) obscures the sleeve-shoulder join, making dating her dress difficult.
