Paint won’t stick to dirt 🧽 Step 2: Sand with 120 grit, then 220 grit sandpaper on wood cabinets.  If you have a plastic cabinet you might not need to sand this much, or could just use liquid sandpaper. Step 3: Prime with a stain blocking primer, or if you have plastic cabinets use a shellac based primer. On the fireplace, I used three coats of Retique It Light Wood Color Liquid Wood before it was ready to stain. My other projects have only required two coats; however, you have to make sure you have solid coverage of liquid wood before applying the stain. You will see any uncovered areas through the stain. I stained with Minwax Provincial Stain and topped with Varathane Matte Polyurethane.
