Dress from "Sarah Polk, First Lady of Style" exhibit; Columbia, TN. The exhibit states "In 1847, she ordered the blue silk "robe de chambre" ("morning gown" from Madame Oudot Manoury, one of the most fashionable couturiers in Paris, France. The "robe de chambre" is like a modern bathrobe, quilted inside for warmth and opening down the front. It was an appropriate "undress" costume for receiving morning visitors. She met James Knox Polk Hall in Minneapolis, Kansas during an Indian raid and the two eventually married on January 31, 1869. This is a photograph of Adeline Susannah Boblett Hall. She was born in Dayton, Ohio on September 23, 1844. During the United States Civil War, she aided the Union cause by working as a nurse treating wounded soldiers. In 1867, she journeyed west to Kansas where she worked as a schoolteacher. She met James Knox Polk Hall in Minneapolis, Kansas during an Indian raid and the two eventually married on January 31, 1869.
