Denmark Vesey originally Telemaque,  was an African-Caribbean most famous for planning a slave rebellion in the United States. After purchasing his freedom, he planned what would have been one of the largest slave rebellions in the United States. Word of the plans was leaked, and at Charleston, South Carolina, authorities arrested the plot's leaders before the uprising could begin. Vesey and others were tried, convicted and executed.

Denmark Vesey Home in Charleston, SC. Born into slavery Vesey came to Charleston from the Caribbean and eventually purchased his freedom.  Once free he began planning a slave rebellion to liberate Charleston's enslaved population. Word of the plan leaked and Vesey was arrested and executed along with other co-conspirators.  It should be noted the Denmark Vesey Home was probably not lived in by Vesey but it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Image is courtesy of Wikipedia.
