Isamu Noguchi once said: “Everything is sculpture, any material, any idea without hindrance born into space, I consider sculpture.” Nowhere is this more apparent than in his Noguchi Coffee Table, which takes the idea of a table, breaks it down into its barest components, and then re-imagines and re-energizes it.

As I stated in my dream living room post, the Arco lamp is one of those classic modern pieces that I’ve longed for since I was young. The hefty Carrara marble base and long sweeping stainless steel neck make for quite the statement piece, yet the lamp seems to fit so well in just about any room. The Arco lamp, designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and produced for Flos, was supposedly modeled after a street lamp design.

The Arco lamp is one of those classic designs where form and function meet and live happily ever after. Designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, it is so practical as to seem almost obvious — how else would you turn a floor lamp into an overhead light? — but the Castiglionis’ interest in ready-mades and functionalism makes this design complex in its simplicity.
