Note the two paratroopers with fixed bayonets on their Sten guns (one next to Killick, the other behind the German prisoner). The Sten with bayonet was a relatively rare example of one of the most famous SMGs of WW2.

75 years ago today, operation Market Garden began: Here we see several British troopers surrender near Arnhem's infamous bridge over the river Rhine after several days of brutal battle [Arnhem, the Netherlands] Ligne Siegfried, Siegfried Line, Operation Market Garden, Bernard Montgomery, Military Operations, History Online, British Soldier, Over The River, Panzer

XXX Corps could not reach Arnhem in time and the defenders of the bridge had to surrender. Some 740 men from various regiments had reached the bridge. Very few escaped. The last message to be received from Arnhem Bridge was, "Out of ammunition. God Save the King."
