On Jan. 13, 1864, Stephen Foster died impoverished in a NYC hotel. Was born on July 4, 1826, in Lawrenceville, then an independent municipality that his father founded in 1814. Was a prolific songwriter & became known as "Father of American Music." Penned 200+ songs, including "Oh! Susanna," "Camptown Races," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" & "Beautiful Dreamer." Due to limited music copyrighting & royalties at time, he realized little of profits his works generated.
