Sand-Mandala, like the one shown here, takes days to create, and will be swept away when completed. Creation of a Mandala is a Mediation in itself, and the act of sweeping it away and disposing it off is a reminder of our own impermanence.
The Wheel of Life is years old and was a gift from Buddha. The mandala reflects back to us much information about the nature of the human mind, which has a strong tendency toward the illusion of permanence.
When finished, to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists, the colored sands are swept up and poured into a nearby river or stream where the waters carry the healing energies throughout the world.
