An intensely bright X-ray beacon shining in the Andromeda galaxy is actually a signpost for a hungry black hole that is gobbling up matter at a furious pace, new studies reveal. Shown here, an image of the Andromeda Galaxy, a composite of an infrared photo from ESA's Herschel space telescope and the XMM-Newtonu2019s X-ray telescope. The infrared frame shows rings of dust that trace gaseous reservoirs where new stars are forming and the X-ray image shows stars approaching the ends of their…

Herschel space telescope shuts down By David Szondy April 29, 2013 All good things come to an end and the European Space Agency’s Herschel Space Observatory mission is no exception. After more than three years in orbit, the most powerful infrared telescope ever flown in space has ceased scientific operations after the last of the liquid helium used to supercool its instruments ran out.

The ring-like swirls of dust filling the Andromeda galaxy stand out colorfully in this new image from the Herschel Space Observatory, a European Space Agency mission with important NASA participation. The glow seen here comes from the longer-wavelength, or far, end of the infrared spectrum, giving astronomers the chance to identify the very coldest dust in our galactic neighbor.

Tarantula Nebula: Hubble Telescope, According to NASA, the Tarantula Nebula is "the brightest... [and] most active star-forming region known in our group of galaxies, containing numerous clouds of dust and gas and two bright star clusters." NASA also gives an evocative description of the image, noting "wispy blue and aqua clouds, shot through with dark filaments and cut with blazing stars."
