Although the park is experiencing a couple of contained fires of its own the majority of this is smoke has been blown in from neighboring fires as far away as Washington state. Photograph by @paulnicklen taken while on assignment for @natgeo this week in Monterey Bay California. Can you guess what species this is? Can you figure out why there are so many scars on its body? These scars are typical on all adults and scientists have their theories on why they are so plentiful. It took a full day of trying but I finally managed to get a shot of it breaching where you can see its whole upper body and easily identify it. To find out about this mystery species please…

Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey). The #NenanaRiver #wolfpack crossing through an area with several trap lines just outside the borders of #DenaliNationalPark Alaska. There are no buffer zones around the Park and trapping or shooting wolves is a fairly common practice in Alaska. Shot on assignment as part of our National Parks series! Watch for this story in early 2016! More #wolf photos at @argonautphoto! by natgeo

Photograph by @paulnicklen // One of the best things about shooting the Hawaii story for @natgeo was the near constant immersion in this beautiful sea. The ocean was full of surprises like being approached by this small pod of spinner dolphins. Please follow me on @paulnicklen as I post my favorite stories from this incredible photographic journey. For @sea_legacy with @cristinamittermeier. #journey #dolphin #smile #love #beauty by natgeo

Photograph by @thomaspeschak Some of the fishermen of South Africas Wild Coast have to walk for hours at night past the boundaries of Dweza Cwebe Marine Reserve to access open fishing grounds. The marine reserve was originally created with very little consultation with local communities and as a result some fishermen now struggle to survive while continuing to operate legally. Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - We're exploring glacier caves and moulins below the majestic Matterhorn on the Gorner glacier in Switzerland. This annual expedition monitors the rate in which these caves change over time. For the next few weeks I'll be uploading photographs from the expedition here. For more from this year and last year's expedition please visit my feed @shonephoto by natgeo
