Messier 34

Messier 34 is an open cluster in the constellation Perseus. Can be seen with a small scope, and is 1500 ly distance. An open cluster has stars that are not tightly bound by gravity, usually are young, and will eventually spread farther apart.

Small Magellanic Cloud and 47 Tucana. Tucana (the toucan) is a southern constellation invented by Plancius in the 16th century. Its stars are not particularly bright, but it contains two interesting objects. The Small Magellanic Cloud may look like a cloud, but it's a galaxy, a small companion to our Milky Way. 47 Tucana is a globular cluster of stars. ©Mona Evans, "Heavenly Aviaries – Bird Constellations" http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art33297.asp

The Hubble Telescope Photographs Messier One of the Densest Cluster of Stars Ever Discovered.

About 3,000 light-years distant it lies within the boundaries of the nautical constellation Puppis. NGC 2438 also seems to lie on the outskirts of bright, relatively young open star cluster M46. But this planetary nebula's central star is not only much older than the stars of M46, it moves through space at a different speed than the cluster stars. NGC 2438 is closer than M46 and so the nebula appears in the foreground, only by chance along the line-of-sight to the young star cluster.

2011 April - Planetary Nebula NGC 2438 is about 3000 ly distant. It lies within the boundaries of the constellation Puppis. This deep image of highlights a halo of glowing atomic gas over ly across, extending beyond the nebula's brighter inner ring

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a rare alignment between two spiral galaxies. The outer rim of a small, foreground galaxy is silhouetted in front of a larger background galaxy. Skeletal tentacles of dust can be seen extending beyond the small g

NGC 1291 (also NGC 1269) - This ring galaxy located about 33 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus was imaged by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The red outer ring is filled with new stars heating up and igniting dust that glows with infrared light

Though galaxy NGC 1291 is quite old, roughly 12 billion years, it is marked by an unusual ring where newborn stars are igniting, visible in this new Spitzer infrared image.
