I've always wanted to learn to weave. I don't have the time right now, but this looks like a great place to start. I love a little carpentry in my crafting.
DIY Weaving with Drinking Straws. Skinny = 3 straws, Wider = 15 straws. Even though this is for children of all ages, I had to read the directions twice, but then I got it and it was easy to understand. Good for small projects like bracelets, and great for kids. Learn to Weave Using a Cardboard Box Loom - All Fiber arts WITH DIRECTIONS
Woven bags. Not really sewing, but a fun craft for kids. It can be done all with yarn, or you use yarn on the loom and weave fabric. Using fabric makes larger knots that (I think) look cool. For the drawstring if you don't want one long one, weave either braided yarn or cording under and over and tie together, repeat but weave the opposite way and again knot ends together. Then pull both stings away from the bag and you have two little handles.
