From the "Death of Major Peirson"- 1783 large oil painting by John Singleton Copley depicting the death of British Major Francis Peirson at the Battle of Jersey on 6 January 1781, during the Revolutionary War. Pompey is here shown avenging the death of Peirson, though the reality is unknown. Black soldiers however were serving the British at the time, former slaves promised freedom if they fought against their Patriot masters.
