Chenonceau

Chateau de Chenonceau - For hundreds of years, France was ruled for kings and queens. They built magnificent palaces and castles, such as Chenonceau, along the River Loire. All this was swept away in the revolution of 1789. The monarchy was overthrown and King Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette, were publicly beheaded. In 1792, France became a republic. Despite some efforts to restore monarchy, France remains a republic.

Born in Italy, Catherine was the Queen of France, mother of three Kings, and a powerful Regent during the turbulent religious wars of 16th century Europe. These are the palaces she lived in and helped build.

Most Beautiful Castles in France

Château de Chenonceau ~ Loire Valley ~ France ~ It is by the river Cher and surrounded by forests and gardens. King Henry II gave it to his favorite - Diane de Poitiers, but when he died in a tournament, his widow the queen Catherine de Medici forced Diane to give it back to her. It's been remodeled numerous times over the years by several different women of position. The gardens are as pretty as the castle itself!

Château de Chenonceau, Loire Valley, France

In 1547 the King gave Diane a sumptuous gift: Le Chateau de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley. This strange "matrimonial triangle" of French history lasted until the death of the King. One century later, the Lord of La Guillonniere was Jacques Audebert, Mayor of Poitiers. In the 18th century, the Lord of La Guillonniere was Michel Mathias Antoine Pays-Mellier who was Treasurer of France.
