Walking With Our Sisters is a travelling exhibition in Canada meant to raise awareness of the 600+ First Nations women who have either been murdered or gone missing (and are now presumably dead) in the past 20 years. The exhibition consists of a floor installation made up of over 1600 beaded moccasin vamps (or uppers), representing how these women's lives have been cut short.
Lakota women on the Central Great Plains created some of the most stunning bead and quillwork produced in this region. Exceptional examples of their work include special occasion shoes with elaborately beaded vamps with forked tongues festooned with tufts of horsehair and fully beaded soles.
