The roundness of the Marquesa's dress suggests this portrait dates from early in the crinoline era. She uses striking red flowers to adorn her hair and her bertha in this Compte-Calix portrait.

The lady in the turkish attire was Caterina Cornaro (1454-1510) by Titian/Tiziano. She was the daughter of one of the most influent families in the Republic of Venice. She married the King of Cyprus and Armenia and when he died Cyprus got under the venetian influence with her as a queen. In 1489 she abdicated in favor of the Republic of Venice.
