The Lady of the Lake was a title given to several different or related figures in the Arthurian Cycle.  This mysterious female gave Arthur the magic sword, Excalibur. Was she a Celtic lake divinity in origin, the same kind as the Gwagged Annwn? More likely she was originally a lake fairy from Welsh folklore.
