FEBRUARY 4, 1979: Jumping On Spring: Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Pete Rose got some early spring training at the University of Cincinnati, where the former Reds' third baseman helped conduct UC's annual baseball clinic. One spectator among the 2500 in attendance asked Rose when to "clear the hips" during a swing. Rose quipped, "I don't know and I don't want to know." The highest salaried player in baseball told his audience to "swing in a downward motion, like you're chopping wood."
