15-12 pg 466 NAVE, CHURCH OF SAN CLEMENTE, ROME. Consecrated 1128. One of the finest surviving collections of early church furniture. The upper wall and ceiling decoration are from the 18th century. The columns were reused from ancient Roman buildings. The church originally had a timber roof, which was common in the Middle ages despite the Romanesque emphasis on stone vaulting. The area in front of the altar is enclosed by a low stone parapet, an Early Christian tradition.
