Abisag - Josefa de Obidos 1650. After a search for the most beautiful woman in the land, Abishag is chosen to be a helper and servant to King David in his old age. Among Abishag's duties is to lie next to him and keep him warm. David does not have sexual relations with her. This is decisive. If David was impotent he could no longer be king, as the Hebrews believed that the fertility of the soil and the general prosperity of the people were bound up with the fertility of the king.
