Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), one of the maximum exponent of modernism in the twentieth century, considered himself a "nationalist mystic". He was mainly known as a great prose writer of modernism (or Futurism) in Portugal, expressing both with his own name, as through its heteronyms, connected to some of the central problems of his work: the unity or plurality of self. Among these were three famous: Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos and Ricardo Reis.
