Africa | Traditional Zulu Thatched House. South Africa | © O. Alamany & E. Vicens

This is a traditional South African home. It is a Zulu Thatched house. These homes are made of mud, grass, and tree poles.

It is interesting to note that the Turkana living along the Kerio River around the areas of Lokori build their homes on stilts. This style, found nowhere else in the district, suits conditions where the terrain becomes a quagmire during heavy rainfall (Pavitt, 1997). It also lessens the problem of termite infestation and increases air circulation, thus reducing the risk of malaria.

A traditional Dorze beehive homestead at Checha, Ethiopia, photo by Adam Lees.

This picture shows a traditional Dorze beehive homestead at Checha, Ethiopia. I think the shape of this building is unique because it stand fairly tall, but also is long.

Dorze house, Ethiopia:

The Dorze houses, Ethiopia, are quite an eyeful, built metres tall initially, they are gradually ‘shrunk’ by termites eating them. The Dorze house has internal rooms on two levels.
