The northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula) is a non-migratory owl that usually stays within its breeding range, though it sometimes irrupts southward. It is one of the few owls that is neither nocturnal nor crepuscular, being active only during the day.

owl | birds of prey + wildlife photography

Tawny owl - Rather than exceptional night vision, this species relies on asymmetrically placed ears, which allow it to pinpoint prey in the dark.

Owls - the wide-eyed staring hooters are out there in the dark watching you, watching for tasty rodents, watching everything. They are really distinct from other birds with their large forward-facing eyes.

Barn owl ~ natural colour

I have a weird thing for owls. They are majestic birds with wisdom in their eyes.

There are 2 owls in this photo. The owlet is just below mom's belly. Can you see him too? The photographer only saw him after looking at her photos. Photo: Marina Scarr - Desoto Park, FLA

It was only when the photographer looked at this picture later that she spotted this great horned owl had a baby, tucked tightly into the feathers on its tummy. It was taken by wildlife photographer Marina Scarr in Fort De Soto Park, Florida

Being Cautious~

"Tropical Screech Owl" - I know it doesn't work like this for the wild and free, but I would really like to have a cuddle of this sweet little round owl.

Eyes too big for your belly?

I've got a frog in my throat. This burrowing owl was left with a huge pair of frog's legs dangling from its mouth when it tried to eat breakfast in one go. The bird struggled to gulp down its prey as it stood in a grassy field.
