Oya is the Undergoddess of the Niger River. She is the warrior-spirit of the wind, lightning, fertility, fire and magic. It is believed that she creates hurricanes and tornadoes, and serves as guardian of the underworld. Prior to her post-mortem deification, the historical Oya was a princess of the Oyo clan as the consort of Shango, its reigning king.

Yemaya is considered the Mother Goddess in African Belief.Her breasts are full and large from birthing so many creations. It is said that Yemaya gave birth to all the world's water. Yemaya is an orisha, originally of the Yoruba religion, who has become prominent in many Afro-American religions. Africans from what is now called Yorubaland brought Yemaya and a host of other deities/energy forces. She is the ocean, the essence of motherhood, and a protector of children.
