Joana Vasconcelos is one of our favorite new Portuguese artists. She works with sculpture and installation, using a lot of materials and symbols that relate to Old Portugal but at the same time have a modernity and simplicity that we just love. Her crochet works, in particular, are very famous.
Invited by the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and RIO450 committee, Joana Vasconcelos will participate in the celebration of the 450 years of Rio de Janeiro. The artist will recapture the symbolic Portuguese rooster of Barcelos, covered with ceramic tiles and thousands of coloured LEDs. The work will be 7 metres high and will be installed in Praia do Leme, located by the famous Copacabana neighbourhood. Opens on 10 June 2015, Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.
Pop Galo, the newest work of the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, recreates the iconic cock of Barcelos, one of our traditional symbols. It has 17000 tiles and 16000 led lights. After standing at Ribeira das Naus in Lisbon during this Xmas season, it will go to Beijing for celebrating the Chinese New Year and visit other countries afterwards. viajarporquesim.blogs.sapo.pt #popgalo #joanavasconcelos #cockofbarcelos #portugal #lisbon #artsagram
