Mata Hari (1867-1917) was the stage name of the Dutch exotic dancer, Gertrud Margarete Zelle. She grew up in the Dutch East Indies. She was a dancer in Paris, with many French military officers as lovers. Her reputation as a femme fatale led the Germans to offer to pay her for any useful information. Foolishly, she accepted, and she also offered to spy for the French. The French found out she agreed to work for the Germans, and arrested her; Mata Hari was executed by firing squad.
