The 18th century example from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, is an extremely rare example of a jade book in the codex form that is better known in the West. The BNF observes that jade is associated with the five cardinal Confucian virtues --kindness, uprightness, wisdom, courage and purity.

The content of the Yongle Dadian, covers all aspects of traditional Chinese knowledge and contains the most important texts available at that time. The first copy (1408) of the Yongle Dadian was destroyed or dispersed and is no longer extant. Professor Herbert A. Giles presented this original second copy to the British Library in 1901.
