Io

Potential Source of Sulfur Flow on Io (NASA Galileo Jupiter Mission Image) A field of bright lava flows next to a shield volcano could be a source of recent sulfur volcanism on Io, as detected by instruments aboard NASA's Galileo spacecraft.

Olympus Mons is basically a large shield volcano on the planet Mars. It stands nearly 22 km (14 mi) tall, making Olympus Mons the tallest mountain on any planet in the Solar System. This mountain stands almost three times as tall as Mount Everest's height above sea level.

'Fountain' | Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) | Originally released May 30, 2007, this image is centered on a small cone on the side of one of Mars' giant shield volcanoes. The cone shows some layers of hard rock but most of it is made of relatively soft material. This appears to be an example of a "cinder" cone composed of pieces of lava thrown into the air during a small volcanic eruption.

Olympus Mons ~ The largest of the volcanoes in the Tharsis Montes region, as well as all known volcanoes in the solar system, is Olympus Mons. Olympus Mons is a shield volcano 624 km (374 mi) in diameter (approximately the same size as the state of Arizona), 25 km (16 mi) high, and is rimmed by a 6 km (4 mi) high scarp. A caldera 80 km (50 mi) wide is located at the summit of Olympus Mons. (NASA)
