Having been neglected for a number of years, this Classical style, Georgian country house in County Durham was in an advanced state of disrepair. Over four years, Mark Gillette Interior Design executed a complete restoration and refurbishment.
Tredegar House was built as a Training Home for Pupil Probationers for the London Hospital. In the 'Wrenaissance' style - with brick quoins, stone dentil cornice, timber sash windows and dormers with alternating triangular and segmental pediments. Rowland Plumbe, the architect & Hospital Surveyor, himself contributed £5,000 to the cost of building work. The new home replaced a Georgian house on Bow Road of the same name, which had been donated to the hospital by Lord Tredegar.
The house is built on a slightly elevated part of the property, which helps give it stature. To avoid a monumental look, architect John Krasnodebski introduced subtle banding at the base of each of the two main floors.
