A BYZANTINE GOLD FINGER RING   CIRCA 5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.   The wide faceted hoop with a granulated triangle on each shoulder, the circular bezel enclosing a steatite disk, inscribed with symbols on the underside, the upper surface enclosed within a beaded border, and covered by four openwork volutes

The ring presented here draws its inspiration directly from the Renaissance. Rings from that period were generally embellished with enamel and set with small gems which at the time were both scarce and costly. Even the small white enameled area at the base of the shank is pure Renaissance in inspiration. As demonstrated here, a clear distinction between the bezel, shoulders and shank was classic during the 16th century as are the shoulders arching upwardly to contact the center form.
