Quality check of new boots for the army at a logistics depot, 1940. Shortage of leather forced the German army to introduce shorter boots in place of the traditional tall army boot, which required almost double the amount of leather in comparison to the boots in the photo. Both short and tall boots proved themselves woefully inadequate on the Eastern Front.

Officers of a Russian emigre unit of the German army formed in Yugoslavia. Most of these Russians sought refuge in Yugoslavia after the Bolshevik Revolution. During WW2, the unit reached 17,000 and fought nonstop in anti-partisan operations. When defeat came, the Russians fought the rear guard action to allow the German forces to evacuate Belgrade largely unscathed. The unit wore German uniforms with Tsarist insignia.

At the start of the war Rabbi Huberband fled from Piotrkow Trybunalski to Sulejow, where his wife and son were killed in a German bombing raid. In early 1940, he came to Warsaw. He was appointed head of the religious department of the Jewish self-help network, & was also a central figure on the Oneg Shabbat staff. Rabbi Huberband and his 2nd wife were murdered in Treblinka in August 1942.
