The first Master was Guillermo d'Eril, and the Order had a total of 15 Masters. A bull by Pope Benedict XIII on January 24, 1401, combined Montesa with the Order of Saint George of Alfama. A Bull of Sixtus V on March 15, 1587 united the Order to the Crown of Aragon. It continued to maintain an autonomous existence under the Crown until its Council was united with that of other Orders on May 22, 1739.
