Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland-1754-1787 He was a close friend and initial patron of a young William Pitt. He was a member of the Rockingham Whigs and a strong advocate of Catholic Emancipation. He was a popular Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a Knight of the Garter and Lord Steward of the Household. He was known for his outgoing nature and unfortunate propensity for drink. He died of liver disease in 1787.
