The artist does not use a pencil or charcoal for the preliminary drawings. It is a tradition to complete the borders of the painting first. The painter then starts making a rough sketch directly with the brush using light red and yellow. The main flat colors are applied next; the colors used are normally white, red, yellow, and black.

Kalamkari, kalam (pen in persian) and kari (craftmanship).Andhra Pradesh craft evolved during Mughals & the Golconda sultanate. The "kalam" is used for free hand drawing of the subject and filling in the colours, is entirely hand worked. Only natural dyes are used. It's done only when there is sunlight as these paintings are dried in direct sunlight.
