Each spring I search desperately in butterfly gardens, hoping to catch a glimpse of a monarch butterfly. I’ll admit, there are a few butterfly species that trick me.

Monarch butterfly populations have declined, from habitat destruction and pesticide use. While gardeners may supply nectar plants for all butterflies, For Monarch butterflies, the host plants are only in the Milkweed (Asclepias) family. Host plants are those on which the female lays her eggs and the caterpillars will feed. Grow several varieties or your favorite in color.
