17th century (but not unlike those of the 16th century) Italian apron. Plain linen, pulled thread work with silk floss in two-sided Italian cross stitch. Inside waistband gathered by feathered, running and back filling stitches. Edged in silk, warp twining with ground weft fringe. Attached by buttonhole and detached buttonhole stitches. Held in the Art Institute of Chicago. 98.6 by 87.7cm.
