Princess Dagmar and her ill-fated fiance Tsarevich Nicholas. She was betrothed to Dagmar, he became ill from meningitis and died in 1865. His last wish was for her to marry his younger brother, the future Alexander III. In June 1866, while on a visit to Copenhagen, the Tsarevich Alexander asked Dagmar for her hand. They married on 9 November 1866.
