Back in 1949 a photographer for LIFE magazine by the name of Gjon Mili had taken some rarely seen shots of Pablo Picasso light painting.

In 1949, renowned LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Pablo Picasso in the South of France. Using a small flashlight in a dark room, Picasso created wildly free and fluid drawings while Mili snapped away. The resulting images are, erm, electric.

LIFE Behind the Picture: Picasso 'Draws' With Light Not originally published in LIFE. "By setting off a strobe light, [Mili] caught Picasso's intense, agile figure as it flailed away at the drawings," LIFE wrote.
