St Peter's Basilica, Rome

Not a cathedral, as it is not the seat of a bishop (the papal cathedral is St John Lateran). Bernini's baldacchino was intended to be surmounted by a statue of the risen Christ, but this proved too much of a weight problem, so a cross was substituted. Everything in St Peter's is on a vast scale, so the size is difficult to appreciate: the baldacchino contains over six tons of bronze; my house would fit (on end) into the space underneath.
