Chris Amon drove the Ford GT40 X-1 at the Times Grand Prix, Riverside 1965. It had an experimental aluminum chassis by Abbey Panels in England. Given to Bruce McLaren for development, the steel chassis cars weighed 2,900 lbs. He and Howden Ganley, got the weight down to 1,900 lbs and used a 427 FE engine. The X-1 competed in 4 races not winning any. The project was handed to Shelby using heavier components, ruined the balance. It was destroyed after the 1966 Sebring race.
