"Park Trail #32"
"Park Trail #32" (pastel over oil wash, 10x8 inches) This week I'll be working on some watercolor underpaintings, bushing up (pun) for my workshop this weekend "Underpainting the Pastel Landscape" (for which there are still a few spaces still available! - visit this link to register!) This one is the last of last week's batch, and I think the best of them. I really think the trick is to allow the underpainting, rather than the photo, to have more control over what you do with the pastel…
Park Trail #40
"Park Trail #40" (pastel, 6x6 inches) $200 unframed for the next two days, or $265 framed Today's afternoon demo in the Milwaukee workshop. I almost have yesterday's demo done, and will have at least 3 new paintings by tomorrow, which I underpainted today. The workshop is going very well; it's a very talented bunch and they're all having fun! Here are some shots from my demo, and some of my students at work on their own paintings from today and yesterday:
On the Drive Home (and Invite to the APS Reception!)
"On the Drive Home" (pastel, 6x6 inches) sold Here's my third little painting from Sunday. For this one I used a combination of almost-complementary and almost-analogous colors in my underpainting. For the blue sky and gravel road I used pink and orange, and for the dark greenish shrubs, shadowed house and green grass I used a violet and a dark teal. I'm really enjoying Terri's underpainting method, especially with the more adventurous colors! I just bought my own tin of denatured alcohol…
Beach Path #2
"Beach Path #2" (pastel over watercolor, 8x10 inches) click here to bid After a 2-day delay, I've finally found the time to sift through my workshop photos from the weekend and create some posts! Here's my first demo from Saturday, our 'indoor' day working from photos. I think this scene was from the San Diego coast at Torrey Pines State Park. Below are some photos of the underpainting and the pastel progression: Thanks for watching! Please share! .
Day 8 - Ranch Road #22
"Ranch Road #22" (pastel, 12x6 inches) click here to bid Day 8 in my 30-Paintings-in-30-Days of November. Saturday morning's demo in my Springfield workshop. I always try to work in at least one landscape and I've done this scene a few times (most recently "Ranch Road #21".) I like the simplicity of the compositional elements that allows for stretching and pulling into a great variety of dimensions. This time I went for tall and skinny! Thanks for watching! Please share! .
Over The Hill
"Over The Hill" (pastel, 6x6 inches) sold I finished this one on Monday. It was the last underpainting from Sunday and I didn't have time to finish during Terri Ford's workshop. I loved my underpainting, and now wonder if maybe I should have let the Red Rule! and ignored the local color of my photo reference. Well, I can always try it again. I do like how this try turned out, too. But I LOVE the red! (Maybe this is why I like the Terra Cotta pastel primer under most of my paintings? Kind of…
Marble Falls TX Quick Draw
Untitled (someone's house) pastel, 12x12 inches, sold This is my First Place win from Saturday's Quick Draw Event in Historic Downtown Marble Falls, Texas! Check in was at 12:30pm but the starting horn wasn't going to blow until 2pm, and we'd have 90 minutes to paint any scene between 1st and 5th Streets on Main. It was a glorious sunny day - absolutely perfect weather, but I knew because of the sun that I wouldn't be able to really choose my location until very close to 2-o'clock. By 1:30 I…
