The Pitoy Moreno Gala

A couple of weekends ago, legendary designer and national artist, Pitoy Moreno presented a selection of over 60 Filipiniana garbs for a charity gala. There were more than 50 stunning pieces shown for the show. Warning, this post will be photo-heavy! The gala started with some tribal gear, er ensembles where beaded tops are paired with shiny tapis. "Catholic Girls Of The Philippines" Circa 1900s I love this picture. First time to see this one. The only time for me to see a girl holding the Tagalog prayer book called "Matuwid na Landas" ( The Straight Path) by Joaquin Tuason (1842- 1908). It is a compedium of formula prayers from the time you wake up until you die. It is a very popular book prior to Vatican II in 1965 when the Catholic rites and liturgy were revised

SOME NATIVE COSTUMES in the PHILIPPINES

Ca.1900 stereoview taken during the days when America conquered and annexed the Philippines to the USA. The word "conquer" was used by the American 3-D publishing houses that issued these views of the USA's "new possession" --- such images giving visual delight to millions of Americans. What better way of introducing the natives of the Philippines as "Uncle Sam's new citizens".....even if the Philippine people themselves had no say in the matter ! In any case, the photographers rushed in…
