Nov. 12, 1939: This photo, published shortly after the start of the Second World War, ran with this caption: “The Winged Victory of Samothrace, another great achievement of the ancient Greek sculptors, packed for removal in accordance with plans for its protection formulated far in advance of the war.” A 2009 exhibition at the Louvre showed photos documenting how art was relocated for safety during wartime. These German generals were captured by the Russians during the Byelorussian offensive in 1944. In all 21 general rank officers were taken prisoner during the battle. The Russians placed 19 of them at the head of long columns of German POWs that were marched through Moscow.

2/10/14- Monuments Men -The Netherlands established the Stichting Nederlands Kunstbezit (SNK), the dutch Restitution Commission, in June 1945. In 1950, the Commission organized an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where looted art returned from Germany was shown. It served the purpose of enabling owners to identify looted artwork. Owners could immediately file a claim for restitution on the spot.
