AVERY GREGORY on Instagram: "I love the sounds of pebbles on canvas so so much. These are “retired” piddock stones - after the boring clams have vacated, they leave pieces of shale full of holes. The shale is so brittle it breaks quite easily on the beach, making for some really good shapes after the waves and sand have polished them up a bit. Lots of 〰 〰〰✨"

Beaches that are great for just walking and blowing the cobwebs away, beaches that are best when we're in the mood to look for creatures, beaches for pottery, beaches for shells, beaches for wading in, up to our knees. One beach that we love, just because there's always something interesting to find, is Whale Beach. That's not its real name, but it's what we call it and often when I ask my kids where they'd like to go walking, Whale Beach is first choice. I particularly love the rich variety of textures on this walk. There are so many beautiful rocks, many of you will have seen them in my stories. When we moved to our farmhouse a year and half ago, I was determined to move away from using raffia, using instead plants from our garden or plants that I could gather locally and sustainably. I had intended to get started on a basketry garden straight away, growing plants specifically for my basketry practice. I quickly realised that this dream was very low on my priority list, when faced with the realities of moving our family to a derelict house. So I started to experiment with all of the plants on our rather wild, uncared for land, keeping an open mind and seeking out hidden potential.
