For Handwoven January/February, Jenny Sennott wanted to try Block Island Blend yarn in a shadow-weave pattern. This 3-ply yarn features a strand each of hemp, cotton, and rayon. The yarn has a crisp, substantial feel (from the hemp), some softness (cotton), and a little sheen (rayon). Each of the 3 strands takes up the dye differently, so the yarn has a heathered look. The Shakers are known for their clever use of twisted weft to create pattern with uncomplicated weave structures, limited most often to plain weave or twill. Their twisted rugs differ from other rag-weaving techniques by using many strands of yarn wound onto the shuttle and then twisted intentionally to create unique optical patterns. For this project, Sara C. Bixler scaled down the classic Shaker rug to something manageable for even the smallest of looms. Twill

Kathleen Farling, like many weavers, loves samples, especially guild samples. One such sample spoke to her and led her to design and weave her Centuries in the Making Runner, a gorgeous 8-shaft table runner. It’s a simple design with a calming effect, but it’s strong on texture and shows off the interaction between rib weave and plain weave in alternating blocks that create a checkered effect. Check it out in Handwoven, March/April 2018! Texture, Textiles
