Mattress, Pillow & Sheets Tutorial

Mattress, Pillow & Sheets Tutorial

I wanted to re-post a tutorial on making mattresses and pillows (for doll beds and cribs). This technique can be used for any craft....here is the formula I follow: MATTRESS Measure your "bed" length and width EXACTLY. Add 1" to length measurement (for 1/2" seam allowance on each side). Add 1" to width measurement (for 1/2" seam allowance on each side). Determine "height" you want your mattress to be. Add 1" to height measurement (for 1/2" seam allowance on each side). YOU WILL NEED: 2…

Princess and the Pea by Jayne Lennard My work over past years has been inspired by the written word, from writers as diverse as Arundhati Roy, Susan Sontag and Sylvia Plath. Fairy tales have provided me with new challenges as I work to distil the stories down to their essentials and in so doing, shed the superfluous, to capture their intrinsic magic.’

Seminars and All Kinds of Quilts

Wow - the International Quilters Association (IQA) quilt show in Houston, Texas will all be history by tomorrow, but what a wild and fun event it was! This month I will be showing you some pictures from my trip to Baltimore on the Prairie, and to the Empty Spools Seminar at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California. I'll also show you some great quilts that I've seen this past month or two... and some that I've been working on... and some that many other quilters have made and wanted to show me…

The Early 19th Century

Early dolls of this era come in many varieites. Materials include carton, wax, and wood covered in gesso. Some of the so called Queen Anne dolls of wood covered over in gesso with cloth joints are really Georgian dolls from the early 19th century. There were also dolls of cloth, and various native materials like leather and cornhusks. There were Native American dolls of many kinds, and these are well represented in works by Carl Fox [The Doll] and Max Von Boehn, [Dolls and puppets]. There…

Come Quilt (Sue Garman)

Did you miss me? I sure have missed writing blogs! And, I don't really have any good reason, except that life got busy for awhile there, and then all this COVID-19 business took over the world. Speaking of COVID-19... I sincerely hope that all of you are safe and healthy, and actively practicing social distancing. I know my sister and I aren't even seeing each other right now, and the only reason we've been in public for anything in the last month is to go to the grocery store. This is some…

“Civil War Nine Patch” from American Doll Quilts For many of us, one of the great pleasures of our craft is the connection to quilters of the past. When author Kathleen Tracy became a quilter, she delved into American history, eager to learn more about those who had put needle to thread long ago. Kathleen’s …
